JM Robert discovered painting at a very early age, fascinated by the effects of patina, wear, and decay he observed on urban facades. Trained in graphic design and interior decoration at the Métiers d’Arts, he mastered the demanding techniques of trompe-l’œil before developing a personal artistic vision inspired by urban art and late 20th-century painters. Gradually, he established a unique, instantly recognizable style.

His visual language, incisive and striking, centers on stenciled faces that emerge against abstract backgrounds evoking the weathered walls of cities. These surfaces, rich in texture and imperfections, become the stage for a tension between decay and emergence.

Inspired by the raw energy of graffiti, JM Robert embraces an aesthetic of immediate impact. Just like the walls of our cities, his works capture the viewer’s attention in a split second. The contrast is striking: the force of the black line, almost raw, interacts with a vivid and electric palette, intensifying the fleeting presence of anonymous faces.

But beyond aesthetics, his work is permeated by a profound reflection on traces and memory. The artist professes a deep fascination with weathered surfaces, ruins, and the marks of time, which he considers his primary source of inspiration.

His painting practice unfolds in two stages. First, he creates complex backgrounds using various materials, coatings, and scraping or scraping techniques to recreate the appearance of an old wall. Layers of color accumulate, seep in, and fragment, revealing random, unpredictable, almost organic imprints. The paint then becomes a living material, marked by dissociation and transformation.

In a second moment, a face emerges—or rather, comes to the surface. Sketched, fragile, almost erased before it is even fully formed, it stands out as a fleeting trace, that of an anonymous and universal presence. Always feminine, this figure evokes a sensitive memory, much like the silhouettes frozen in history, hovering between appearance and disappearance.

JM Robert thus explores an aesthetic of ruin, where line and color seem never to fully come together. From this tension emerges the artwork: an unstable equilibrium, a controlled dislocation that echoes the fractures and uncertainties of our time.
